What is PCS 7

The process control system created by Siemens called PCS 7 is an automation system based on the hardware of Step 7 and the process control philosophie of Teleperm. These two systems combined created a proven in use and developed for industry hardware base, with an easy to use low custom content software platform. In practice PCS 7 is a control system for process automation that has features like batch process control, process safety control, route control, power control (IEC 61850), Telecontrol (DNP3) and standard process control on a defined and a Siemens maintained library included.

Where is PCS 7 used

PCS 7 is mainly used in the process industries. a couple of industries that would benefit from using PCS 7 are:

  • Water and Waste water
  • Food and Beverage (Controlling the process, not single machines)
  • Oil and Gas (or small power)
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Chemical
  • Biological
  • Mining and minerals
  • Pulp and paper

This is due to the high degree of elements in a single process line, or the way of producing. When talking about single line – single product production on a small scale, TIA Portal should be used. In multi line or multi product cases or bigger single line instance, PCS 7 is usually the better option.

Advantages of using PCS 7

Because of the standardized, maintained by the manufacturer, programming and visualization object set, PCS 7 is going to look and feel the same on one part of the plant as it will on another side of the plant. Or even between multiple plants. This is advantageous because it allow factories to train personell on one standard of controls, while having the freedom to choose any service or engineering company the like for the implementation of the system. PCS 7 also has all of the tools that modern automation platforms need to have (like redundancy, client server, remote IO, web reporting, web visualization), and it has all of the optional extension to make sure the system will fit a particular industry. So whether you are looking to automate a gasline compressor station, a multiple foods line or a complete factory, PCS 7 is the correct choice.

Engineering in PCS 7

PCS 7 has many ways of programming, the most common way  is using the grafical programming environment call CFC, this allows engineers to drag and drop library blocks made by Siemens in to a programming area, and link the object with the rest of the automation. A block or object could be a valve/motor/analog value or anything like that. These objects will automatically be generated to the visualization system. So once the PLC program is completed, the visualization system for the operators will also be generated automatically using the Siemens standard library.

Sequence programming, a very important thing in the process industry, is done via a sequence editor, this allow direct control over steps and transitions in the PLC. This is also directly generated to the visualization system, and so the operator can see the programmed sequence, and also follow the process as it is executed by the sequence.
